PARISHIONERS at St Andrew's Church in Cleeve Prior have scooped a best kept churchyard competition.

A tree was planted in the churchyard last Saturday to commemorate winning first place in the group two category, for the churchyard with over one acre of land.

The competition is jointly organised every two years by the Worcester branch of the Campaign for Rural England and the Worcestershire Federation of Woman's Institutes.

Vicar, the Rev Richard Evans, said: "We are pleased to receive the award, especially for Mike Walker who has worked so hard towards it."

Tom McDonald, chairman of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, said: "This year all entries were faced with a tougher challenge because of rule changes.

"The judges were not only looking for the best kept churchyard, they were looking for those that adhered to a raft of legal and environment conditions.

"Judging at all level was demanding. Competition standards were high. So many of our churchyards are now not only beautiful, they are safe to be in."
