A FEMALE cider maker is now at the core of the industry after becoming the first woman to head its leading organisation.

Helen Thomas, the MD of Weston's Cider, is the first female face of the National Association of Cider Makers in its 85-year history.

The NACM represents the interests of cider producers from the largest in the world to the single-handed businesses.

During her nine years at the helm of Much Marcle-based Weston's, Helen has seen the firm go from strength to strength.

Now she hopes to help others do the same. She said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead our industry, particularly at this time when there is real momentum, excitement and innovation evident from cider makers.

"I have had to work hard to earn respect, but have always believed that the continuous quest for innovation and a passion for whatever you choose to do are vital."

After a two-year spell as deputy chair of the NACM, Helen now steps into the lead role for the next two years.

Outgoing chairman, Hugh Archibald, is sure the association will be in good hands.

He said: "Helen's family heritage and the business she leads are both considerable assets to the industry as a whole. Quite apart from that, her drive, tenacity and abilities as an individual make Helen a very worthy person to lead our industry. I have been delighted to have worked with her and I wish her every success."

Helen will combine the role of chair of the NACM with her full-time responsibilities as managing director of Westons Cider.

As the great granddaughter of Henry Weston, who founded the business in 1880, she is very aware of the traditions and heritage of the family-owned business and of the industry as a whole.

She added: "I have worked in many roles within the business, taking charge as managing director a decade ago.

"I am determined that the industry should address the fundamentals of continually improve product quality, seeking innovation in all that we do, and ensuring our actions deliver a sustainable industry for all cider makers and for others in related fields."
