A BROMSGROVE rider has been selected for the Olympic Development Squad.

Jessica Varnish, aged 14, will be given a chance to shine and impress the Great Britain coaches when she competes in her first ever training squad at Newport, Wales.

The gifted teenager will be rubbing shoulders with some of the country's best young riders and will be under the watchful eye of top coach Iain Dyer.

Jessica's father James Varnish believes this could be the start of path, which could take his daughter to the 2012 London Olympics.

He said: "The squads are a long term project for the best young riders around to be given a chance.

"Who knows where this will lead to? I'd love Jess to make it to the 2012 Olympics, but the Beijing games are not too far away and Jessica would be 18 when they come around so maybe there's a chance of making them."

Jessica, who has just began her high altitude mileage training, is in fourth place after the first round of the Revolutions Series in Manchester.
