AN array of artistic and entertaining treats will be served up at a free event to kick-start Black History Month.

Gospel singing, live music and poetry are just some of the attractions on offer at Redditch Town Hall this Saturday.

The event, staged by Descendants of Windrush (DOW) in conjunction with Worcestershire County Council and West Mercia Criminal Justice Board, was made possible thanks to a Community First Local Network Fund grant of almost £6,500.

The funds provided the group with disco and music equipment and the chance to take part in music workshops under the tuition of vocal trainers.

From noon-4pm youngsters will be able to take part in a number of workshops and music, performance and refreshments will spice up the day for entertainment seekers.

Young people will lead the evening's entertainment, with DOW's youth group Likkle Roots and Bethel United Junior Choir offering a fine display of musical and visual performances from 7pm.

DOW's chairman, Veron-ica Allen, said this year's theme, Black History Makers of Today, encouraged youngsters to celebrate and reflect on local and international black people's achievements, in addition to learning more about their history.

Admission to the free event is by ticket only. Tickets are available by calling 60423 or 07929 044729.
