MEMBERS of a group which provides community activities in the heart of the Conway Estate are hitting out at a "catalogue of vandalism" which has plagued them.

The Alcester Opportunities Community Centre, off St Faith's Road, has fallen prey to a number of attacks, and the most recent, earlier this month, saw a collection of tiles on the side of the building chiselled off and scattered round a nearby park.

Diane Seaborne, senior youth worker at Alcester Opportunities, said staff arrived on the morning of Thursday, October 6 to discover the tiles in pieces, with a chisel they thought had been used to destroy them.

"They are handmade tiles children and adults made in one summer project, they are not anything we can replace, we can't go to B&Q to get some more," she said.

"They've had a few cracks and bashes before but this time they have actually been pulled off the wall - someone had obviously thought about it."

Mrs Seaborne said previous incidents included a willow project made by groups at the centre being vandalised, drains had been deliberately blocked, and people had tried to break in.

"It's not so much that this is the worst, it's more of a catalogue of events, it's obviously the same gang seeing where and when they can do it," she added.

She said groups had been working on painting two metal pods at the centre, but it seemed like an uphill struggle.

"Groups which use this facility spend time on projects but within a few months they're destroyed," she added.

"We try to do things to improve the area then this happens - it's the level of the incidents, they just go on and on."

A Warwickshire police spokeswoman said it was important any incidents involving criminal damage were reported to police as soon as possible, so they could be investigated.
