ADRIAN Mayhew and Rob Inett both claimed top five finishes at the Padstow to Roch Surf Race.

The South Worcester Life Guard Club duo were among more than 300 swimmers setting off for the mile-long discipline.

The pair tucked in among the leading group of ten that was reduced to five at Doom Bar, where the tough sand bank makes shallow swimming impossible.

Competitors turn to a technique called dolphin diving and the Vale pair were certainly very adept at this as they sprinted out of the water with Inett in fourth and Mayhew in fifth.

The pair's then travelled to Cardiff to compete in the National Surf Ski Race staged over 10K.

Inett stormed ahead from the gun, while his clubmate was content to sit back in the pack.

However, Mayhew found trouble with weed collecting around his rudder that cost him several places, while an exhausted Inett was overhauled n the final couple of kilometres and just missed out on a national title.

Mayhew produced a fine late burst and, when the results were finally announced, the pair had both finished fourth in their Masters and Open categories.

Both men now move on to Loughborough for the Invitational Flatwater and Stillwater events at the end of next month.

Before then coach Eddie Fletcher will be busy preparing the pair for the National Stillwater event in the new year.
