WORCESTERSHIRE Race Equality Council has donated £1,000 to the Worcester Muslim Welfare Associa-tion's fundraising appeal for victims of the Kashmir earthquake.

Malik Fayaz, the Association's chairman, said: "The donation is greatly appreciated.

"Hopefully, people who see this will be encouraged to donate to this worthy cause of rebuilding the community of northern Kashmir."

Anyone who wishes to make a donation should send cheques to Worcester Muslim Association, Tallow Hill, Worcester, WR5 1JU.

Fifteen British rescue volunteers, including an Evesham man, have returned to a hero's welcome after saving seven lives in the earthquake-ravaged Pakistan. Jonathan Wharrad, of Briar Close, and the other members of Rapid UK worked day and night pulling trapped people from the rubble on the site of Margalla Towers - 10 apartment blocks, two of which had collapsed on to each other - in Islamabad.

The volunteers, who flew out last Saturday, are from throughout the UK. They were met with a spontaneous round of applause as they walked through the arrival gate at Heathrow's Terminal 4 building on Friday.
