THE people of Droitwich are preparing to pay a glowing tribute to a group of national heroes and their place in history.

The town is one of several across the country lighting a beacon to commemorate Vice-Admiral Hor-atio Nelson, the gallant crews of his fleet and the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

The Mayor of Droitwich, Councillor Richard Morris, will light the beacon on the highest point in Droitwich, at St Augustine's Church, on Trafalgar Day, Friday, October 21, at 7pm.

Members of the public are invited to attend the lighting ceremony and join in the celebrations. The first beacon in the chain will be lit in Portsmouth alongside Nelson's flagship, HMS Victory.

As parking space is limited at St Augustine's, people are advised to use a nearby a car park and make their way on foot.

A community service will be held at 4pm on Sunday, October 23, at St Andrew's Church, Droitwich, to mark the anniversary of the battle.

It is hoped a peal of bells will ring out from two of the Droitwich Spa churches to complete the commemorative weekend.
