YOU do well to try for community support over the retention of jobs on the Kays site. We know the company organisation has changed and market conditions are more difficult but are there not certain obligations left over from the old days?

When Kays was firing on all cylinders it did a lot for Worcester and Worcester did a lot for Kays - not least the provision of a pretty committed and loyal workforce .

As I recall, even the dear old city council did its British bit. At the time when Kays were anxious about modernising and rationalising their stores ,they submitted a planning application for the giant building alongside the Bromwich Road.

It was hardly a thing of beauty and a joy forever but the committee of which I was chairman bit our collective lip and let it through. We did it for Worcester and for the future sustainability of the company.

I 'm sure the present company management will want to be judged equally responsible. Now is their pay-back time.
