A 200-year-old inn overlooking the Malvern Hills has won the accolade of pub with the best view in the country.

The stunning scenes from the Brewers Arms in West Malvern beat scores of other pubs to be judged the Best Pub Landscape View in Britain.

Trevor Marston and Sue Adamson, who took over the pub just six months ago, are delighted at winning the promotion, which attracted entries from Cornwall, Dorset, Hampshire, Kent, the Midlands, Wales, the Lake District and Scotland.

Trevor explained: "On a good day you can see the Black Mountains of Wales as far as Abergavenny. The views are simply breathtaking.

"We have a visitors' book people can sign and we get a lot of lovely comments about the views, especially the fantastic sunsets."

Trevor and Sue, who run the Brewers Arms under a tenancy agreement with the Pyramid Pub Company, have spent the six months they have been in occupation clearing the garden so customers can enjoy the view.

"When we arrived, the views were totally obscured by fences and high trees, which have all been taken down to reveal what has now been judged one of the best views in the country," he said.

Trevor has also been converting a former tea room into a function room that will feature a picture window overlooking the spectacular outlook.

The contest was organised by pub operator Eldridge Pope and the licensed trade paper, The Morning Advertiser, after Eldridge Pope's operations director, Tim Bird, visited one of the company's pubs, the Hare and Hounds, high on the hilltop at Bath. He was so taken back by the stunning views from the pub that he launched an internal competition to discover if any of the company's 180 pubs could beat it. They couldn't so Tim decided to take the promotion a step further by issuing a challenge to any pub in the country to beat it. After weeks of studying the entries, judges have voted the Brewers Arms the overall winner.

Some of Eldridge Pope's pubs offer accommodation and Trevor has won a weekend for two at one of the inns, along with a plaque which he intends to hang in the bar.
