THE coronation dress of a

former Lady Beauchamp is thought to have provided the lining for one of the beautiful handmade vestments on show in Powick Church this week.

The historic vestments and altar frontals, which are no longer used, have been put on display by Powick Sewing Group tomorrow and Sunday, from 2pm to 4pm.

One of the members, Thea Wild, said she believed the white silk lining of one of the vestments came from the dress worn at a coronation by an ancestor of Lady Beauchamp.

Before the First World War, it was given by the then Lady Beauchamp to the Rev Frederick Newson, who gave the vestment to Powick, where he was an assistant.

"When it needed repairing, Joanna Spreckley arranged for the work to be done in memory of her husband, Captain Malcolm Spreckley," said Mrs Wild.

"Suitable brocade was found in Exeter and embroidery thread had to be specially dyed to match the existing thread."

The delicate needlework was done by Gwen Matthews, of Powyke Court Close.
