HOUSE builder Persimmon wants to reassure residents living near the former DERA site in Malvern that they will be listened to and their views taken into account.

Persimmon, which hopes to build 300 homes on the former MoD site on Leigh Sinton Road, put up two large advertising billboards 12 weeks ago without planning permission.

Some residents now feel the developers cannot be trusted.

The billboards, near two of the entrances to the site, were erected in July, but the company only submitted a retrospective planning application on September 15.

"It's worrying for people living nearby," said local resident Maurice Curtis.

"We feel, as residents, that if Persimmon can go ahead putting up these signs without permission can we trust them?"

Mr Curtis, who lives directly opposite one of the large green and white signs, that is illuminated at night by a nearby street lamp, contacted the company to see if the sign could be re-sited.

He also contacted the district council to express his concern about lack of planning permission.

Mark Platts, managing director for Persimmon's South Midlands division, said: "While it is the industry norm for 'land acquired' signage to be erected during planning negotiations, we are aware that residents close to the site feel they have been affected by our actions and, therefore, we have subsequently submitted a retrospective planning application for the signage."

Mr Platts said signs were normally erected for a short time before construction work began but there had been delays. Persimmon is still in discussion with Malvern Hills District Council over its plans for the site.

"We would like to reassure residents that during negotiations their suggestions and comments have been taken into account," said Mr Platts.
