TV programmes such as Dragon's Den might make good TV but in reality, finding the money to take your business proposal forward is no laughing matter.
However, a new scheme from Business Link West Mercia aims to help firms in Herefordshire and Worcestershire do just that.
The R2i programme takes a business proposal and helps the company present its opportunity in such a way as to make it as attractive as possible to a potential lender or investor.
Through a mixed programme of workshops and additional one-to-ones with consultants, the business is taken through the risks of different sources of finance, given help with its plan, impartial advice on different investors and also given follow-up support while the investment is taking effect.
Nick Bonnaud, business adviser for Business Link West Mercia, said: "The R2i programme covers everything from making sure the business is sustainable commercially, and has growth potential, to how much finance is needed.
"Most business plans get chucked in the bin as soon as the money is raised. But we take them more seriously than most people. Investors want to see a clear plan of action and want to be able to see they are actually getting what they paid for.
"Women, more than men, don't get a fair deal from the finance market, which is why we are holding a special R2i event for women."
R2i is a Business Link scheme delivered locally through the Chamber of Commerce. It is funded by regional development agency Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund. For details log onto www.westmidlandsfinance.com
