A SCHEME set up a year go to tackle prolific offenders in North Worcestershire is being hailed a success by the police.

The Prolific and Priority Offender team was set up after the home office identified that 10 per cent of all offenders were responsible for 50 per cent of all crime and by targeting the so-called "prolific offenders", crime figures could be significantly reduced.

The team initially consisted of four detective constables and a detective sergeant but has expanded to include six detective constables.

Det Sgt Brian Russell, who leads the team, said their main focus had been to "catch and convict" but other elements were "prevent and deter" and "rehabilitate and resettle".

He explained: "We identified more than 40 criminals that we class as being "prolific" offenders and we have used both intelligence-led policing and forensic opportunities to target this group.

"They are responsible for many types of offences.

"Over the 12-month period, we have arrested more than 40 of our targets and continue to monitor more."

He said officers would work with partner agencies, such as the probation service, to arrange visits while offenders were in prison and offer help and advice before they leave.
