THE Ladies Team from Bromsgrove Golf Centre are preparing to jet off to Spain next month after reaching the semi-finals of a national golf competition.

The triumphant team of Andrea Kiernan, Liz Newton, Lis Stirling, Debbie Degge, Janet Fung and Kerry Coulter won their Mail On Sunday Golf Competition quarter final match against Romsey Golf club in a very hard fought match at The Marriott Worsley Park Hotel and Country Club three-and-a-half to two-and-a-half.

The team, which will include Jill Bullock and Bev Dodds as reserves, now head out to El Rompido in Andalucia to do battle for the prestigious trophy. The national competition started with over 3,000 teams and 19,000 players and after Bromsgrove Ladies' win last weekend they became one of the final four teams.

Bromsgrove Ladies were drawn in the quarter finals against Romsey.

Bromsgrove did not make a good start and by half time they were down in three matches, all square in two and only up by just one hole in one match.

Then Janet Fung play some of her best golf and won her match 4&2. Debbie Deggs then halfved her match on the 18th to make the match two-and-a-half to one-and-a-half in favour of Romley. In the two remaining matches Bromsgrove were one up and all square, making a play off a real possibility.

On the 18th tee, Andrea Kiernan pulled her drive but recovered with an excellent second to within pitching distance of the green and soon putted out to win her match. This left the last match all square going up the 18th but, with a play-off looming, Kerry Coulter played three textbook shots up the fairway to end up four yards short of the green and 20 feet from the flag. She putted up to three foot from the hole and forced a concession from her opponent.

Moments afterward she was engulfed by all the members of the Bromsgrove team.
