THE last thing doctors want to do is play God - but a musical Worcester medic is looking forward to making an exception.

Dr Peter Crookall is to take on the role of the Almighty when he joins other singers to perform excerpts from Captain Noah And His Floating Zoo.

A special version of the popular work, by Joseph Horovitz, forms the climax to a fund-raising concert for the Noah's Ark Trust, being given by students of successful Worcester soprano Luise Horrocks.

In his spare time Dr Crookall, who works at Haresfield House, in Bath Road, is one of Luise's pupils and will be among a group of a dozen singers performing operatic arias, folk song arrangements, songs form the shows, duets and trios.

Saturday's From Handel To Horrovitz concert, in All Saints' Church, Deansway, Worcester, is the fourth such showcase and, this year, will not only raise money for the trust, which helps bereaved children, but the All Saints Church Organ Fund.

Luise Horrocks said: "The aim is to raise money for charity but also to give students an opportunity to put together a full concert."

"Last year we raised £1,000 for Acorns Children's Hospice. I really like to do this for a local charity working with children, hence the choice of Noah's Ark Trust this time.

"It is a splendid opportunity for adult singers to perform in a concert designed to showcase them - there is so much talent in Worcestershire.

"It's also a fun and friendly evening, with everyone supporting each other.

Accompanying the singers on piano, organ and flute will be Luise's husband John Brierley - who is also the organist at All Saints, which is trying to raise the £10,000 needed to refurbish its historic pipe organ and was recently featured on Radio 4.

The music-making is due to get under way at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 (£4 concessions) and are available on the door.
