WHETHER Miss D Church (Letters, Tuesday, October 4) likes it or not, the UK will remain in membership of the EU because Israel, USA and China require Britain to act as "policemen" on their behalf. We have seen from the Rover episode the growing power of China, which has a population nearly three times as great as the entire European Union.

Negotiations with Turkey, with a view to that country becoming a EU member, will start shortly. However, such negotiations by the EU would never have been scheduled if it had not been for intervention by the USA, which pressured Austria to come into line and drop its objections. In turn, the Jewish lobby in the States ensures that the USA only acts in accordance with Israeli wishes. Perhaps Miss Church should note that Israel and the Union of South Africa were allies during apartheid days in the latter.

However with the ending of the apartheid era, Israel had to find a new ally. This was Turkey, now to become a member of the European Union.

Turkey will, of course, add a new dimension to EU.

D E MARGRETT,

Worcester.
