RESIDENTS have enjoyed tours around Alcester's recently found Roman fort.
Earlier this month, the Chronicle reported the discovery of the fort in Bleachfield Street by Hereford-based Archaeological Investigations Ltd.
The group discovered a number of ditches, as well as broken pottery and part of an ancient cemetery with cremation burial pots.
And last Wednesday, the site was laid open to give townsfolk the chance to see the discoveries with free guided tours.
Archaeological Investigations Ltd excavation manager Niall Oakey said despite the day being overcast and chilly, more than 400 people came to watch the archaeologists at work, forcing them to double the number of tours.
"A small display of pottery and other artefacts found on the site was also available for viewing by the visitors, who included a number of school parties," he said.
He said that as many people would have been unable to attend the event, he hoped to give a talk on the dig some time next year.
"This will allow time for us to begin analysis of our records and discoveries and hopefully, present the full story of the site," he added.
Anyone who can offer possible venues for a talk can email Mr Oakey at niallo@ailtd.freeserve.co.uk
