A MEMORIAL is planned in honour of a former Bishop of Worcester, four years after his death.
The Rt Rev Philip Goodrich died at the age of 71 in January 2001 following a short illness.
Now the diocese of Worcester is urging parishioners to get behind the idea of engraved commemorative glass gates that will lead to the Cloister Garden at the cathedral.
A diocese spokesman said: "As well as being an aesthetic piece, enhancing the entrance, the gates would exclude the cold in winter.
"They will be a reminder of many aspects of Philip's ministry within the diocese when he served as Bishop from 1982-1996.
"He is remembered as a deeply pastoral and much-loved bishop both by the clergy and the people.
"He was a very approachable person and the idea of opening up gates to this lovely part of the cathedral seemed very appropriate.
"His friendly personality, and his sense of fun, endeared him to hundreds of people in both his professional and his personal life."
Bishop Philip was also involved with urban and social issues, a force behind the cathedral restoration appeal and chairman of the Children's Society. He backed the ordination of women.
The diocese has worked with his wife, Margaret, on the design of the memorial and is now looking for donations from clergy and parishioners to make it a reality.
Contributions should be made out to Worcester Cathedral and sent to: The Chapter Office, 10a College Green, Worcester, and marked Bishop Philip Memorial.
Any surplus donations will be donated to the diocesan link with Peru, a cause to which the late Bishop was committed.
