THERE was a good turnout to fish the Derek Evans Float Only Trophy last Sunday, with Malvern United Angling Association members relishing the challenge of catching fish by means of float fishing only.
Conditions were far from ideal, with blazing sunshine and a clear river Avon, bites were going to be hard to come by.
After a near miss in the Taylor Cup, Barry Hill went one better and took this most prized of cup contests in the Malvern calendar. It was also Barry's first win in the Malvern club.
Barry drew peg three and tackled it with a pole and fed groundbait to take some nice skimmers and a few roach and perch for a total of 6-6-0.
Runner up was Mike Spragg from peg 18 who netted 4-7-0 thanks largely to a nice tench of 3-14-0 taken on pole tactics.
Third spot went to club treasurer John Shaw with a mixed bag of roach and perch taken on his new rod.
Neil Humpage claimed fourth place with 2-1-0 consisting mainly of perch taken on the pole close in.
There are still places available for the club's outing to the King Sedgmoor drain in Somerset on Sunday, September 19.
Tickets to include peg fee and coach are £20, the coach will depart around 7.30am and will call in for refreshment at a hostelry on the way back. To book a place ring Mick Perks on 01684 561777.
The bank clearing on the club's new stretch of the Severn is going well and several pegs are now fishable but there is more work still to be done. Working parties will be there on most Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings if any members want to lend a hand.
