Redditch United (0) 1 Bromsgrove Rovers (0) 1
MATT Johnson showed a cool head to slot home a late penalty to lift Rovers' spirits in an entertaining friendly clash at the Valley Stadium on Saturday.
Johnson made sure that Rovers' ended their five match losing sequence in pre-season in the 82nd minute, after Delton Francis had been fouled in the box by defender Gary Knight.
The draw was the least that the visitors had deserved after they more than matched a strong United line-up for most of the game.
Rovers had the best of the early exchanges and Chris Smith had a goal disallowed in the sixth minute.
United defender Mark Creighton then flashed a header wide from Asa Charlton's corner two minutes later.
Striker Scott Rickards was then unfortunate to have a goal disallowed on the 13th minute.
A mistake by defender Dennis Pearce gave Rovers a clearing scoring chance in the 19th minute.
The defender slipped while trying to cover a stray pass and the ball fell to Riad Erraji.
The midfielder lofted the ball over the defence and set Lee Greenway baring down on goal, but keeper Ryan Young was equal to his low shot.
From a 37th minute corner Redditch almost broke the deadlock.
From Charlton's corner Danny Scheppel sent in a cross and Craig Wilding's header skimmed the cross bar.
Scott Hadland's fierce shot was held by Young in the 43minute.
Rovers came under increasing pressure from the hosts in second half. Phile Male cleared Scheppel's 55th minute shot off the line from Charlton's probing corner.
Former Redditch player Matt Gardiner also beat Wiliding to the ball on the line, after Rovers keeper Lee Evans had missed Chartlon's free-kick.
Second half substitute Matthew Barnes-Homer set up Leon Mitchel for a shot in the 72nd minute, but Young was equal to it.
Young performed even more heroics, blocking Barnes-Homer's shot and Mitchell's follow-up in the 74th minute.
The deadlock was broken by Paul Moore in the 77th minute.
Rovers had won a corner and called for a penalty when Gardiner was brought down in the box.
Their calls were ignored and Rickards picked out Moore on the right and the sub stroked the ball past Evans.
But Rovers roared back and Francis was toppled in the penalty area by the experienced Knight when trying to win Evans' long ball forward.
Johnson made no mistake as his well taken spot kick beat the diving Young.
