THERE was a meeting at The Chase high school on Thursday for residents to discuss traffic calming measures proposed in conjunction with the Science Park development.
Most people hope 'consultation' is inclusive and productive but after lots of dialogue the master plan was finally unveiled, done and dusted in advance! No noticeable benefits for residents, but a solution aimed at satisfying government criteria for schools, at least a benefit for the students.
In principle, I have limited reservations with the master plan but I noted numerous residents striving for a cycle path. Our councillors were completely silent.
Geraldine Road is a wide road, it has 3,600 children trips to school daily and has a very busy volume of traffic. We were advised child safety was paramount, yet lack of a cycleway leaves cyclists at the mercy of traffic or pedestrians at risk when they cycle on the pavement.
The county council advised us that funding was not an issue, as the Science Park will pay, so I implore it to solve the simple engineering problem with tarmac and look to the future.
Geraldine Road is blessed with over 14 feet of pavement. Do we need pavements so wide that one can push the equivalent of seven double pushchairs side by side?
A new cycle path can only increase the likelihood people will take the healthier option. Indeed, Science Park employees cycling was a major suggestion in the original planning application to reduce traffic volumes.
Would our councillors please take notice as we were not impressed as you sat through the meeting silently slumped in your chairs.
MR PARSONS, Geraldine Road, Malvern.
