Golfers will tee-off at a memorial day for John and Annie Hofton, who died in the Boxing Day tsunami.

Money raised will help survivors in Khao Lak, Thailand, where the couple were on holiday at the time.

The event takes place at Sapey Golf Club tomorrow (Saturday) and has attracted enormous support. Mr Hofton was captain of the club 1997.

Organisers Phil and Tina Hodgson were close friends of the Hoftons for more than 20 years.

"They were a fantastic couple who lived life to full," said Mr Hodgson. "The circumstances of their tragic deaths should never be forgotten."

Many of Mr and Mrs Hofton's friends are expected to attend the memorial event.

The family will be represented by Mr Hofton's brother Jimmy and his sons Edward and Tom.

Tom said he and Edward had been in touch with the Red Cross and planned to take proceeds from the tournament directly to a Khao Lak orphanage.

"We want to make sure the money goes direct as Thailand can be quite corrupt," said Tom. "We're looking to raise quite a bit of money on the day, hopefully quite a few thousand."

More than 30 teams of four have entered the tournament, which begins at 11am. Many more had to be turned away.

They will be competing to win four hand-painted vases donated by Bronte Porcelain of Malvern.

A raffle and auction follow the golf, with items on offering including a rugby ball signed by the World Cup-winning England team.

Many Malvern businesses have donated prizes and money in support of the event.
