STOURPORT is set to be the next town in Wyre Forest to benefit from high-tech crimebusting CCTV cameras.

Town councillors voted unanimously at a meeting last week to use £20,000 from a Wyre Forest District Council grant to fund the purchase of two new devices.

Councillor David Little said plans were now in motion to equip the town centre - which could also soon have an alcohol restriction zone in place - with the 24-hour monitoring equipment.

He added: "Obviously, we are still at a very early stage of the process but we want to get everything in place as quick as we can.

"The cameras could be placed at the top of High Street and maybe in Bridge Street or York Street but that is something that still needs to be discussed.

"There is a possibility that we could pay for more cameras next year but that depends on if we are given another grant."

Seven cameras, which are monitored from a control room in Bromsgrove, went live in Kidderminster town centre last February.

Stourport beat manager, PC Jon Harris, said: "We are very much looking forward to the new cameras being up and running.

"We hope they will not only act as a deterrent but also reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, assist with detections and reassure residents and visitors.

"We anticipate that the CCTV system will be extremely effective in Stourport and expect it to be an important factor in the successful policing of the town centre."

Councillor Nathan Desmond, the district council's cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: "This is fantastic news. We very much welcome Stourport Town Council's decision to contribute this money to the project for CCTV provision.

"We are very eager to take the benefits of the scheme - which has proved to be very successful in Kidderminster - to both Stourport and Bewdley."
