A GROUP of around 20 teenagers have backed moves to elect a junior parish council.

The youngsters supported plans for a seven strong, elected, youth council at a meeting in Salford Priors last Tuesday.

The elected youth team would promote youth projects and operate with its own budget. Youth council members would shadow existing councillors but would decide their own program of ideas to support youth activities in the village.

The interested youth candidates, aged 11 to 15, already have a full portfolio of suggested schemes they would like to see introduced in Salford. Girls believed the existing recreational area was too biased towards the boys' interests. The girls want an aerobic area. Following England's recent success in The Ashes, there is a wish for cricket nets to promote unisex cricket. They say priority should be given to a bus shelter in School Road for students waiting for schools buses. There was also support for local youth drama production, "We would like to make new, young, theatre, not the usual boring old stuff," was one comment from Mick Cocker.
