A KNIFE-wielding man threatening to harm himself brought a quiet Malvern residential street to a standstill for hours yesterday.

The man, named by local residents simply as Paul, shut himself in 8 Hampden Road from around 2.30pm. He was carrying a six-inch carving knife and was alone in the house.

Around 10 police vehicles raced to the scene and officers cordoned off the street, along with parts of adjoining Merton Road and nearby alleys. One medical support car was also on site.

There was believed to be at least one armed police officer and several police dogs were also brought to the scene.

A plain-clothed negotiator could be seen offering the man cigarettes and attempting to talk him out, however Inspector Gregory, leading the police, declined to comment on the matter.

The excitement brought scores of onlookers onto the Worcester Road, as well as people out of pubs and even onto over-looking balconies. Children were also taking photographs with mobile phones.

Neighbours and residents were reluctant to speak but their original curiosity was soon replaced with concern over why the incident took so long to tackle.

One neighbour said: "There are so many police here. I know it has to be handled properly and safely but it seems to have taken a very long time."

Officers initially told residents of Hampden Road they could go home, but would be escorted and had to remain in their house. Later, all members of the public were stopped.

At around 4.15pm, a van filled with a riot squad arrived, and a team of officers pulled on black jump suits, body armour and had riot shields at the ready.

They later appeared to stand down - taking off some of their armour and drinking cups of tea by their van - as Inspector Gregory said he expected a 'peaceful' resolution later in the evening.
