THE president, Mary Davies, opened the September meeting, extending best wishes to the five birthday girls. Business began with a brief talk by Phil Haynes; he explained his idea to have a Bromsgrove 'Day of Kindness'. A day when he hoped everyone would show each other an act of kindness either by an offer of help, a kind gesture or just a cheery hello. He hopes to involve local schools and churches. The designated day is October 14.
Mary gave details of the autumn group meeting, which is to be held at Catshill Working Men's Club on October 20. The guest speaker will be Will Farmer, who will talk on antiques and also give valuations on members' own prized possessions.
Details of the carol concert in Kidderminster on December 2 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the WI were given. The theme for the evening will be a journey into Christmas. Members can also look forward to a Christmas shopping trip to Chester on December 6.
Business over for the evening, Mary introduced the guest speaker, Ken Hughes, a retired medical scientist and pathologist. He told members that on his retirement 16 years ago he decided to become a tour guide in his native Birmingham, and now holds the highest award in this field. He is now in much demand for his tours and giving a series of talks every week.
Mary thanked him and everyone had a chance to ask questions. Many thanks to Mary Davies for holding the social evening in August at her home. The competition winner was Sylvia Matthews with her unusual piece of jewellery. The next meeting will be held next Monday at 7.30pm in Catshill Village Hall.
