A STUDENT launched a violent attack in the toilets of a Redditch bar after a drink was spilled on his trousers.

Martin White broke Patrick McGeough's nose and cut an eyelid punching his head, Worcester Crown Court heard.

White, who was studying maths and psychology to qualify for university, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Sentencing White, aged 23, of Clent Avenue, Headless Cross, to nine months jail, Judge Michael Mott said it was a totally unprovoked attack in a public place.

He added White had been given chances by the courts before by imposing non-custodial sentences for battery and assault.

The victim met friends inside Chicago Rock on February 23 but was approached by White in the toilets and asked about the drink incident before being attacked, said Tariq Shakoor, prosecuting.

White landed three blows before a number of other men kicked and punched the victim.

The defendant told police he was barged at the bar and challenged Mr McGeough in the toilets, claiming he was pushed in the chest before a fight broke out.

Brett Stevenson, defending, said he deeply regretted the violence and wanted to apologise to the victim.

He had taken steps to alter his lifestyle, had a part-time job at a supermarket and socialised in another town.
