CAMPAIGN groups dedicated to the restoration of the Droitwich Lido have given a cautious welcome to new proposals for a 21st Century site.
SALT (Save A Lido Today) viewed Wychavon District Council's plans for the Lido, complete with a heated outdoor salt water pool and wet play areas at last week's overview and scrutiny committee meeting in Pershore.
SALT's chair, Linda Watkins said: "In an ideal world, we would have liked to have seen the old Lido fully renovated and reinstated as a basis for further development. However, we accept that realistically, this is not going to happen without substantial outside funding."
She added that the group was pleased that the council had listened to residents' requests for a rectangular shaped pool with salt water.
"We are also happy that the old art deco building and existing changing rooms will now be retained, albeit with a modern mixed changing area to be more family friendly," she added.
"We feel that the maximum proposed depth of 1.4 metres may be too shallow."
The Friends Of Droitwich Spa Lido And Its Park has urged the community to have its say.
Spokesman Ian Wild said: "The Lido has the potential to be the focus of a tremendous amount of civic pride and community involvement. As a town we must ensure that this potential is fulfilled.
"There will be a period of public consultation and it is vital that everyone gets involved in this."
He was thrilled that the need for a learner pool had been met.
"What we have been presented with are proposals, not plans, so I don't think we should be too worried about details at the moment.
"At this stage, what is absolutely vital is to get the concept right," he said.
Today, the council is due to meet to discuss the proposals in more detail at an executive board meeting at Wychavon's Civic Centre in Pershore.
The proposals were well received at last week's council meeting.
Chairman Rob Adams said: "I am extremely pleased with the supportive comments from the councillors and the public."
