READERS of the Worcester News are well used to seeing letters criticising speed cameras. They usually describe them as "cash cows" for the Government and then get a swift rebuttal from the Safety Camera Partnership claiming that they are there to save lives and not to swell the Government's coffers.
Given that the Safety Camera Partnership has a surplus of funds that they hand to the Government, could I ask them, through your newspaper, if they could spend the surplus cash on other road safety measures?
For example, near where I live, on the A44, there are a series of 'S' bends where a headlong crash killed two lorry drivers last year. There is no sign telling drivers they are approaching a series of dangerous bends.
That is one use of surplus cash for road safety. No doubt your readers can suggest many more. To the Camera Safety Partnership, contributing to road safety means more cameras. Speed is not the only cause of accidents. Inappropriate speed is the killer. Why do they not spend the spare cash on making the roads themselves safer? We might stop moaning then.
TERRY JAMES,
Drakes Broughton.
