EVESHAM'S annual and historic Mop Fair was launched last night for what promises to be a fun few days.
Town mayor, Coun Frances Smith, is calling on people from far and wide to visit the event, particularly as this year is the 400th anniversary of the Town Charter.
The charter, granted by King James I, on the request of his son, Prince Henry, in 1605, created the borough of Evesham and allowed for a council and mayor to be elected. It also gave the town fair and market rights.
Coun Smith, said: "It's a very popular fair. It always has been. It is a great tradition for Evesham.
"I'm hoping people will come and support it."
Frank Green, clerk to the town council, explained where the fair's name had originated from.
Mr Green said: "People used to go to offer themselves for work.
"Women used to turn up with mops to offer themselves as cleaners, so it got the name Mop Fair.
"But it evolved in to being more of a fun fair."
The fair is taking place at Merstow Green tonight and Saturday night.
There will be the usual fairground ride, including a carousel and dodgem cars, as well as plenty of different stalls.
