MALVERN TOWN U16s 4, FC PHOENIX U16s 1

MALVERN Town U16s played FC Phoenix U16s for the first time in this Mercian Festival Junior League fixture and came away with a good victory.

For the second week running it was Malvern who started the brightest and they were awarded a corner on four minutes which Ricky Buckland took and drifted across the goal for Ryan Mansbridge to powerfully head home.

FC Phoenix fought back and on 11 minutes just shot wide. Malvern stepped up the pressure and Paul Jordan, Ollie Mason, Josh Brentnall and Ryan Mansbridge all narrowly missed the goal. On 28 minutes FC Phoenix broke away and Dan Harris pulled off a super save to deny them the equaliser.

The second-half started with Malvern pressurising the FC Phoenix defence and on ten minutes it paid off when Ryan Mansbridge made the score 2-0. Two minutes later FC Phoenix pulled a goal back through Dan Morris but Ryan Mansbridge completed his hat-trick on 20 minutes. Malvern continued to test the defence with a number of near misses but on 30 minutes Ryan Mansbridge wrapped the game up with his fourth goal.

NEWTOWN SPORTS COLTS U15S 6,

WORCESTER RAIDERS 2

NEWTOWN Sports Colts had to come from behind twice, before seeing off a determined Worcester Raiders last Sunday.

The Colts took the game to Raiders in the opening stages, with Roskams, Powell, Allison, Newell and Edwards stroking the ball around nicely in midfield. Buckle and Hale up front created one or two half-chances without threatening, although Newell could have opened the scoring but missed find the target. Then, with their only attack of the half, Raiders took a shock lead with a nicely-taken goal, which left Morse, Elmes and Scullion a little red-faced.

Crane, Budd and Caffull came on for the Colts as they looked to go on the attack, and it paid dividends within seconds of the restart, when Crane bundled his way through to tap-in. However, Raiders once again took advantage of some slack marking and scored another well-taken goal, which gave Johnson no chance. The Colts then took a stranglehold on the game, with Budd, Allison, Edwards and Hale with a brace, knocking in the goals. Hale's free-kick being the pick of the bunch. Credit must go to Raiders, who certainly made the Colts work hard for their victory.

NEWTOWN SPORTS COLTS U13s 2,

NEWTOWN SPORTS JUNIORS U13s 3

THE Juniors took the points in the most local of local derbies to maintain their unbeaten start.

With a strong breeze and bumpy surface, neat football was hard to come by and the more direct route was to prove more productive. Colts enjoyed early pressure but failed to capitalise and it was Juniors who struck first. Some excellent trickery from Watling saw his shot brilliantly turned onto the bar by Sparrey but Bannister swooped to head into an empty net. Colts then had a glorious chance to equalise but Freeman stood tall to save. A though ball then set Turner free and he made no mistake to see his side 2-0 up at half-time.

Again flowing football was absent for the second half but the Juniors went three in front when Roskams weaved his way through the defence to net from a narrow angle. Colts threw caution to the wind and piled on the pressure Freeman made two smart saves and then turned a fine effort onto the post, but with five minutes remaining Preece sprinted clear to net. Still Colts attacked and grabbed a second when the forward got behind the defence to score with a neat clip. Juniors held on to secure the points.

Man of the match was Christopher Freeman.

NEWTOWN SPORTS GIRLS' U12s 2,

WORCESTER RAIDERS GIRLS 1

NEWTOWN Sports U12 Girls' continued to enjoy their early success with another win when they hosted Worcester Raiders Girls last Tuesday.

Elmes, Clements and Williams all started well in midfield and were ably assisted by Emma Davies and Matthews-Jones in defence. With their confidence high, Newtown took the lead when Williams latched on to a through ball and coolly slotted home past the Raiders' keeper. This spurred Raiders into action and although Mead and Georgina Davies came on to shore up the Newtown defence, the Raiders soon equalised through a well-taken goal.

In the second-half, Houghton and Douglas came on for Newtown, and with a better shape they gained more quality possession. McBain always looked threatening up front, but it was Williams who notched the second goal for Newtown following a mazy dribble. Raiders pressed for an equaliser, but Green in the Newtown goal looked assured and pulled off one great save, before the final whistle signalled a Newtown victory.

LEIGH & BRANSFORD BADGERS U10S 2

THE Badgers gained their first victory of the season in this evenly-matched contest.

Right from the start the Badgers pushed forward and created some good opportunities. Daniel Roberts ran well and pushed forward down the channels and was well supported from midfield by Adam Larter and Edwin Stephens. At the other end Newtown also pressed for the opening goal and produced a number of good attacks, with the bar denying them that first goal.

Newtown started brighter in the second-half and created a number of chances for themselves. The opening goal came from a well taken corner which the Newtown player volleyed home from inside the penalty area. Both teams continued to battle for possession in midfield with the occasional chance falling to both sides. With five minutes to go Daniel Roberts broke through but was adjudged to have fouled the Newtown defender.

Two minutes later he broke away again following a pass from Michael Eades and battled with the Newtown defender for the ball and was able to rifle a shot into the top corner. In the last minute Daniel Roberts broke away again before scoring low into the bottom corner.

DROITWICH U9s 0, NEWTOWN COLTS U9s 2

THE Colts carried on their fine start to the season and maintained their unbeaten run.

A quiet opening saw Droitwich on top kicking down the slope but some great defending by Ross Harness kept them at bay. Towards the end of the first-half Colts introduced the dangerous Alex Doyle and he nearly broke the deadlock with his first touch. The ball broke to him on the edge of the box and his shot was well saved by the goalkeeper, Ben Jackson followed up but the goalkeeper was there again to keep the score goalless at half-time.

The second-half saw Colts on top and it did not take long for the deadlock to be broken. The ball was picked up on the half-way line by Alex Doyle, who beat two defenders and fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

A good turn and shot by Ben Finch skimmed the post and Fraser Crump's trickery was a constant threat to the Droitwich defence.

With five minutes left C increased their lead when a fierce strike from outside the penalty area from Alex Doyle gave the goalkeeper no chance.
