GRAHAM Turner will adopt the 4-4-2 system for the foreseeable future as Hereford United bid to boost their goal tally.
The Bulls host Canvey Island at Edgar Street tomorrow having scored just eight times in their previous 10 Nationwide Conference games.
Director of football Turner believes the old formation, which adopted three centre-backs and wing-backs, has resulted in the struggle to hit the net, although it worked a treat in previous seasons, especially in the 2003/04 campaign when Hereford blasted 103 league goals.
United's heavy influx of summer signings have found the system troublesome to embrace, leaving Turner no option but to switch it around.
The new formation worked well enough on Tuesday, as the Bulls won 1-0 at lowly Aldershot with a first-minute strike by Danny Carey-Bertram.
"The system had not been working for us," said Turner. "The players have not embraced the normal system and that's why we've gone to the 4-4-2.
"The 3-4-1-2 worked well for us in the past, especially two seasons ago when we scored plenty of goals.
"With that system, Ben Smith played in the position behind the front two and scored 14 goals in just two-thirds of the season. But it has not worked out with the players we have here."
Turner added: "It was a much-needed victory (at Aldershot). We played particularly well in the first-half and then defended well in the second-half when they put us under plenty of pressure.
"We scored in the first minute, but it isn't necessarily the best time to score. We scored first at Halifax in the first 10 minutes and then didn't play after that. It obviously gives you a lift but you need to keep going and we did not do that at Halifax. At Aldershot, we made certain that we played well."
Once again, Carey-Bertram is expected to be partnered in attack by 19-year-old Matt Bailey, who made a decent impression at the Recreation Ground following his month-long loan move from Crewe.
Guy Ipoua (hamstring) and Stacy Coldicott (back) are out, while striker Adam Stansfield yesterday saw a specialist to clear up his groin problem. Turner is likely to keep faith with the centre-half partnership of Tamika Mkandawire and Darren Blewitt, meaning another game on the bench for Tony James.
Canvey, who have scored in every league game this season and managed a 1-1 draw against Stevenage in mid-week, are without leading scorer Lee Boyland.
Turner added: "Canvey come here on the back of a decent result against Stevenage, so they will fancy it. They are a tough side to play against."
