MALVERN RFC were defeated 15-24 by Midlands Two (West) leaders Kenilworth at Spring Lane on Saturday but matched their visitors throughout.
Director of rugby David Robins thought the game had been there for the taking and was far from disappointed by his team's display.
Robins said: "Had we been able to kick our penalties and not had the bad luck over forward passes not being spotted, we could have easily upset the apple cart. I felt we were every bit as good as Kenilworth, who know they are fortunate to still top the league.
"Our new-look side is starting to gel well. Gareth Taylor was outstanding, Stewart Lucas at prop was an unsung hero and we were by far the best in the forwards. Phil Snare will be an outstanding number eight if he continues to work on his fitness, his all round play was eye-catching during the match.
"We still need to work on our midfield play to get quicker ball away, but it will come with hard work on the training field. We now go to second-placed Newport with renewed confidence."
Newport have got off to a good start with three wins out of three league game and only sit in second place on points difference.
Malvern are away at Newport tomorrow (Saturday) and next Saturday (October 8) are at home to unbeaten Broadstreet before they welcome Midlands One side Rugby Lions to Spring Lane in the second round of the Intermediate Cup on Saturday, October 15.
