THE Malvern U13 Marauders stepped up to their first 15-a-side match of the season with a squad of 22 players making the journey to Thornbury.
With changeable weather conditions, the coaches agreed to play the fixture in three 20-minute sections.
The teams were fairly evenly matched, with Thornbury demonstrating greater strength of numbers and drill in their formidable pack. Their co-ordinated power in a mauling game continually put the Marauders, captained by Alex Easterby, under great pressure.
The Marauders were forced to defend their line throughout the first two periods of the game and earned plaudits from all spectators at a tenacious effort. With many new players in the Malvern squad, a little lack of experience in the backs division led to some good moves breaking down and Thornbury were ahead by 19-0 at the end of the second period.
The final 20-minute period of the match was extremely even and finished 0-0.
Any aspiring Year 8/U13 players who would like to join the squad will be made welcome at Spring Lane. For more details, contact Simon Bott on 07767 818229.
