SCORES of jazz fans turned up at the Plough in Pershore at the weekend for the eagerly-awaited return of the Dutch Lewis Broadband. They were not disappointed.
From the familiar Is She Is or Is She Ain't, to Gentle Rain and Pale Moon, this consummate professional, with his charmingly offbeat manner, held them spellbound for three fun-packed hours. Dutch's own arrangement of Tequila gave the entire line-up - he and Jayne Lewis on vocals and sax, Trevor Davies (guitar), Dayne Cranenbourgh (bass) and Ian Russell (drums) - a chance to showcase their versatility.
But the highlight of the night was Jayne's singing. Pure and powerful, her voice evoked powerful memories of the best of Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald and drew enthusiastic applause from the audience.
Given the nature of the pub - which has a series of adjoining rooms - I felt the volume was perhaps slightly too low, but this could have been due to the fact the show was being recorded for the band's next CD. Still, a great night.
