ANGRY mums have boycotted a children's play area after it was refurbished with dangerous wood cuttings.

Now parish councillors, who ordered the refurbishment, will reconsider their decision at a meeting next week.

Janne Tustin, who runs the playgroup at Offenham Village Hall, called a halt to outside activities when she saw what had happened last week.

Janne, whose three-year-old son Jamie attends the playgroup, said: "I would not let him or any other child play in this stuff. It is highly dangerous."

The playground, which has swings and a slide for the youngsters, has been resurfaced with slivers of wood, some of which are razor sharp.

Janne said: "Any child falling from the slide onto that type of surface could have their skin ripped open or even lose an eye.

"It is incredibly dangerous and I just can't believe the council allowed this to be put down."

Sarah Bates, whose two-year-old twins Orla and Erin attend the playgroup, agreed.

"This is lunacy," she said. "The parish council is putting children at risk, or it would be if we allowed them to play there.

"They said they were putting down playbark but this is more like broken-up palletes. The wood is sharp and highly dangerous to children.

"None of the mothers would let their children anywhere near it. This stuff has got to be moved before we let our children anywhere near it.

"The kids love playing outside and it's awful that they can't go out and enjoy themselves, but this is for their own safety."

Parish council chairman Grenville Burrows confirmed they had been made aware of the mothers' concerns.

"I think it is something which would have to be discussed by the parish council," he said.

He confirmed that the matter has been placed on the agenda for the parish council meeting due to be held on Monday.
