BROOM residents have appealed to Bidford Parish Council to help secure plans to build a new village hall in the area.

The residents attended a meeting on Monday and appealed to the council for financial help with their hall.

Broom residents obtained the building three years ago from the Women's Institute and managed to secure a donation of £100,000 from the Lottery fund in June.

Villagers felt the out-dated and small building was in desperate need to be re-built to meet the needs for those who use the facility. The committee hopes the money will help build two rooms along with a kitchen with disability facilities.

Ann Lester from the Broom committee said: "We are looking for a sum of something like £84,000 to match the amount given to us by the Lottery and other agencies. The building needs to be built to meet the standards of modern usage."

The group has successfully got donations from companies around the area, one being Cemex. Cemex is a minerals company situated in Marcliff at the heart of a planning debate with Bidford residents and the parish council has donated £15,000 to the fund.

Chairwoman for Bidford parish council, Joy Keeley said: "We have decided to donate £5,000 to the village hall but unfortunately we cannot offer any more money at this stage."

The group have six months left to meet the deadline set by the Lottery fund before they withdraw their donation.
