FORMER Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was today due to visit pupils at Worcester's Elgar School of Music to show her appreciation of the county's favourite son.

Dr Donald Hunt, the principal of the school, which is situated near Huntingdon Hall, in Deansway, said: "It is a private visit.

"There will be a little concert for her by some of the students and members of staff.

"She will also go around the school looking in on lessons. "I believe she's an Elgar enthusiast."

Dr Hunt added that Baroness Thatcher's visit had been shrouded in secrecy for a number of weeks.

He said: "We weren't able to disclose the visit until now. We have known for a few weeks. The Metropolitan Police have been here to check things out."

Even now, 15 years after she left Downing Street as Britain's longest ever serving Prime Minister, the Iron Lady is still a controversial figure.

During her 11 years at Number 10, Baroness Thatcher's harsh economic reforms made her a conservative heroine, but many on the left never forgave her for her bitter battles with the unions, particularly during the 1984 miners' strike.
