ALCESTER'S Mop Fair returns next week, bringing all the fun of the fair with it

The Mop Fair is based on traditional hiring fairs, where farmers, tradesmen and householders gathered to employ their servants for the coming year.

Servants looking for work would display an item showing their trade with more lowly workers wearing a piece of mop - hence the name.

Maurice Abney-Hastings, the town's low bailiff, said the fair would be opened by the high bailiff with an official proclamation at 4pm on Tuesday.

"There will be a fun fair and lots of people come from outside Alcester to visit," he said.

He said children from the town were traditionally given one free ride, and the event would also include traditions such as bread-weighing and ale-tasting.

High Street, Church Street and Henley Street will be closed from noon on Sunday until midnight on Tuesday.
