KS Athletic 1 Droitwich Spa 2
DROITWICH recorded their first win of the season to progress into the second round of the Worcestershire Junior Cup on Saturday.
Spa, currently bottom of the Midland Combination Division Two, won the match with a late goal from Roger Denby.
Droitwich started brightly and Neil McCullough put his side ahead with a fine finish.
However, in the second half Droitwich were pinned back in their own half by their Kidderminster opponents.
They were pulled level in the 80th minute when a deflected corner equalised for Athletic.
But with extra-time looming Droitwich went in search of a late winner.
Ian Cottrill won the ball in the air and Denby forced the ball home from close range.
Manager Tom Goss admitted he was relieved to see his side finally bag their first victory of the campaign.
He said: "We've been playing well for a month. The nerves crept in at the end, but the players' heads never dropped even when Athletic scored. We bossed the game and deserved a winner.
Droitwich take on University of Birmingham in the Challenge Vase on Saturday (2.45pm kick off).
l Droitwich's reserves weathered a late fight back by Heather Athletic's second string to win Saturday's Challenge Urn match on Saturday.
