JEAN Lewis (Letters, Monday, September 19) asks "is it fair to the rest of us?" referring to possible free travel for "children" under 19 and pensioners.
Well, I am not sure about the young people as, one way and another, they do pretty well these days. In any case they should be able to walk most of the time.
However, I would point out to Mrs Lewis that since Thatcher tied pensions to the cost of living index instead of the wages index, incomes for the elderly have fallen behind grievously on this score alone. Add to that the fact that interest on modest savings is hardly worth picking up these days.
Furthermore, concessions for entry to sporting occasions, entertainment, stately homes and so on have either been drastically cut or ceased altogether in recent years. It's time something was done to ease the plight of the elderly.
D E MARGRETT,
Worcester.
