REGARDING the picture of the Red Lion (Letters, Tuesday, September 20) I remember this pub and also the Hereford House at the other end of the street.

In between those two pubs were three faggots and peas shops - one was Bullocks caf, if my memory serves me right.

I was an apprentice photo engraver in those days, working for Berrow's Newspapers Limited. Our department and the photographic department were in Sansome Street, opposite Bands funeral parlour, now part of City Walls Road. It was my job as the apprentice to take a large crock jug down Newport Street for those lovely faggots, peas and gravy, at 6p a go in old money. Those were the days.

DAVE BRANCH,

Hanley Swan.
