FAMILIES will be able to get their teeth into a special day at Hanbury Hall devoted to the apple.

Visitors will be able to take along apples from their own gardens for identification when the 18th century country house hosts the Apple Day on Saturday.

Local expert John Edgley will be on hand to help identify some of the mystery apples between 11am and 5pm. People should bring two or three examples of the fruit they want identifying.

Staff will also be selling carrier bags to visitors who can then go and fill them up with apples from the site.

Hanbury Hall boasts 136 traditional fruit trees, with around 40 apple varieties - among the oldest is the Catshead, which dates back to 1600.

Other varieties grown at the property include King of the Pippin and Peasgood's Nonsuch, which date from the 19th century. Visitors can sample apple juice made at Pershore College and see an apple press in action.

Walcot Organic Nursery, of Drakes Broughton, will also be on hand to take orders for organic fruit trees.
