DROITWICH Spa resident and England's cricket hero Ashley Giles is now set to be honoured by the town mayor after his Ashes heroics.

The five test series that gripped the nation's imagination during the summer saw the Warwickshire spinner take ten wickets before hitting a memorable 59 runs during England's final innings at The Oval to help tie the match and bring The Ashes home.

His key contribution was made all the more special after originally being targeted by the Australians as the weak link in the side.

Giles was even criticised by some England sections before his efforts with the bat and his solid job with the ball justified his selection.

Town hero Ashley will now be given the title of 'Honorary Citizen' by the Mayor of Droitwich Spa, Councillor Richard Morris, at a special reception at the council chambers at St Richard's House, Victoria Square, at 5.30pm on Friday, October 14.

Mayor Richard Morris, said: "It is with great pleasure that I can announce that I will be honouring Ashley Giles as a resident of Droitwich Spa, for his role within The Ashes-winning England cricket team."

While the reception event will be a private occasion, Ashley has said if there are children from Droitwich outside he will say hello and sign some autographs. Players from from Droitwich Spa Cricket Club, who achieved a semi-final place in the national finals of the 'Wise Communities Twenty20 Cup' earlier this month, will also be at the reception.
