LONG awaited plans for a new lido development in Droitwich Spa have been officially launched.

The proposal for a 21st century lido in the town was floated before Wychavon District Council's overview and scrutiny committee last night after new designs were released.

A rectangular pool forms part of the concept with the depth earmarked as being 1.4m at the deep end and moving to a beached shallow area.

The proposal also includes the attraction of saltwater, which is one feature that is wanted by many residents. Water will also be heated to 21c (70F).

The current changing rooms will be refurbished and replaced with a village changing concept and toilet area. According to the plans sunbathers will be able to enjoy the warm weather on an area on the poolside.

The proposals will be put to members of the council's executive board on Tuesday so they can decide if the concept is a possiblity.

If they concur, after taking on board comments from last night's scrutiny committee, then the plans can be priced up before being put to them again in more detail around the end of the year, possibly for the go ahead.

However, the old indoor pool on the site would be demolished under the new plans to make way for extra parking for visitors. A caf will also be built in the reception area, which will replace the current kiosk.

Another new attraction is two wet play areas - one of which will be made accessible and free of charge. The second, located inside the complex, will offer more interactive play and will have controlled entry.

The wet play areas will include features such as water cannons, palm tree water sprays and water jets.

To save on water a recycling plant will be built.

Leader of Wychavon District Council, councillor Martin Jennings, said: "The overall concept is based upon developing a lido for the 21st century which is available to everyone and which has a more welcoming environment and range of activities on offer."

Currently admission fees and running costs have not been decided. If the plans do get the go ahead towards the end of the year it is hoped the facility will be available for use next summer.

A public consultation will still be included in the process at an early stage.
