A MEETING to try to save the future of the former Kays catalogue business in Worcester has been postponed for a week.

The Transport and General Workers' Union was due to meet representatives from the Bransford Road site and with officials from its owner Shop Direct last Friday.

But the company, which has proposed closing the local warehouse with the possibility of 700 job losses, did not provide all the information the union had asked for.

Alun Hayes, the union officer for Worcester, said: "We think the site is viable and will be doing all we can to support our members and protect their jobs.

"We believe there are several holes in what has been put forward and we will be scrutinising and challenging their business case.

"To do this we need financial details from the company and they did not provide all we wanted on Friday.

"We hope to have this information this week and will talk to our members at the beginning of next week. I will be able to say more then about our proposals to keep the warehouse open."

If the plan - exclusively revealed by the Worcester News last week - goes ahead, Shop Direct admitted it will have a major impact, with up to 500 job losses.

But the union believes more will go as the warehouse closure would mean the end of all other departments at the site, including transport, print and mail, and security, and have put the total figure at 694.
