WORCESTER skipper Pat Sanderson is desperate to produce an all-star show in tomorrow's Churchill Cup clash against Canada and stake his claim for regular international recognition.

The 27-year-old, who will captain his country this weekend, is hell-bent on making his mark and in the process challenge the likes of Martin Corry, Lewis Moody and Richard Hill for an England jersey when the trio return from Lions duty in New Zealand.

England must beat host nations Canada to reach next week's Churchill Cup final, where they will play the winners of USA and Argentina.

"We're here to play for our country and that in itself is a massive thing," said Sanderson.

"I played in this tournament last year and in 2002 -- it's a huge opportunity to impress. The aim is to play well and win a place in the Six Nations team and then potentially the World Cup.

"When you're at the very top of the food chain the difference between being selected and not in the Six Nations are very fine. Often it's about taking the opportunity when it is presented to you."

Worcester new boy Andy Gomarsall has been handed a starting berth against the Canadians in Edmonton.

Gloucester's Peter Richards had been told by England coach Joe Lydon he would start last week, but a last minute U-turn has seen Gomarsall restored.

"I've got my own personal targets and I want to try and establish myself full-time back in the England team," said Gomarsall.

"I was not selected for the Six Nations this season and that was a huge hole in my season. I need to put that right now.

"I'm looking to produce a series of good performances during this tournament, which will help to enhance my reputation.

"We're very wary of the Canadians because they've got good strength in depth. England teams of years gone by have played in the Churchill Cup and have had to be at their best to win here. There's one hell of a challenge ahead of us."
