DIRECTORS of cricket may not have the same aura as football bosses.
The round-ball game is so far removed from anything within modern sport today. However, whatever game you play, it goes without saying that there must be a leader, some sort of focal point for your team.
You have to suspect that Tom Moody's round-the-world trips cannot have helped Worcestershire maintain their focus over the past few weeks.
Knocked out of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy and hardly firing in the batting department, the County are in desperate need of direction.
It's not quite the introduction to captaincy that Vikram Solanki would have hoped for, but supporters can only pray that there is a swift end to all the uncertainty which, at present, envelopes New Road.
Moody has done a fine job at Worcestershire. However, someone, somewhere needs to make a decision for the good of the club.
The Australian has made no secret of his desire to coach at a higher level. That's all well and good but at present, he is paid by the County -- not India nor Sri Lanka.
His priority last week should have been in Chelmsford, not Colombo.
The clause in Moody's contract allows him this freedom but what if -- given the rather septic state of Sri Lankan cricket -- he doesn't land the job? What happens to Worcestershire then? Does he simply return to carry on where he left off or will the County bite the bullet and keep Steve Rhodes at the helm?
We started off the season with speculation over South Africa. We moved on to India and now we're left with Sri Lanka.
It's never going to end while Moody continues to search high and low for a higher profile job. But don't the supporters and the players deserve better than this?
If Rhodes was good enough to take charge on Friday then why not this week?
For me, it's time to put an end to the uncertainty. If Tom Moody feels it's time to move on, then make his wish come true.
Despite his height, nobody should feel bigger than the club and it's high time Worcestershire stood up for itself.
