n I AM very pleased to read that Mary Billingham is one of our keen recyclers and uses the different coloured sacks to sort her waste (Letters, Wednesday, September 14).

However, I need to correct the misapprehension that once at the recycling plant, everything is placed on the same conveyor belt to be re-sorted.

I can assure her that her purple sack containing paper and textiles is placed on one conveyor and her clear sack with its plastics and cans is placed on a separate conveyor. The sacks are split open (and are themselves re-cycled) and the individual materials from each sack are collected together into containers and sent to the reprocessors.

This arrangement will continue to operate as all areas of the city move over to wheeled bins.

A new sorting plant will be used when wheeled bins are introduced. This will have the capability of sorting all recyclables collected together. This is one of the reasons why the wheeled bin scheme will make it easier for householders in Worcester to recycle their waste, as only one recycling container will be needed.

Photographs of the bag sorting process can be seen on the council's website (www.cityofworcester.gov.uk. click on recycle). The website also contains information about the new wheeled bin recycling and refuse scheme.

Environmental Protection Officer, City of Worcester.
